Station 6

Station 6 stands in Altusried at the Bahnviadukt Leubas, a railway bridge built from porous tufa stone. The structure belongs to the historic railway line connecting Memmingen and Kempten. Its arches trace a nineteenth-century route through the landscape of Lauben-Heising, where fields, water sources, and transport networks once met. The bridge forms one stop on the Lauben history walking trail, alongside mills, pumping stations, chapels, and former schools.

Construction brought disputes over damaged fields, surrendered land, and farmland divided by the railway. The Leubas springs also suffered during the works. A former watering pond had to be filled for the Illertalbrücke, and traces of it remain visible nearby. Local workers and about one hundred Italian laborers built the bridge by hand, without machinery. That detail gives the tufa masonry a direct connection to the people who reshaped this countryside. The project linked communities and helped move people and goods between Memmingen and Kempten.
