St. Mauritius

St. Mauritius is a Catholic parish church in Muthmannshofen, a district of Altusried in Germany. Its history begins within the walls of Muthmannshofen Castle. The church grew around a tower that likely dates from the eleventh century and originally served as a residential stronghold. The tower retains thick walls, narrow windows and defensive loopholes. Later additions joined this former residential tower to a religious building with a late Gothic appearance. The parish appears in records from the thirteenth century. Restoration and enlargement shaped the church across later centuries, including work on the tower, nave and interior. Bronze church bells hang in the bell chamber. One bell bears a fifteenth-century date, while the others reflect the church’s history of wartime losses and replacement. The west façade carries a glass rosette. Diagonal roof beams reinforce the structure, and a pointed pyramid roof crowns the relatively low tower. An image of Saint Mauritius stands on the high altar. His dedication connects the church with military patronage and a story of martyrdom under Roman rule. Tall linden trees stand beside the church. Muthmannshofen remains a rural village, and St. Mauritius forms part of its Catholic parish community.
