Pompey’s Pillar and the Archaeological Garden rise on an ancient hill in Alexandria, among layers of Mediterranean history. A red granite column dominates the open-air site.

It stands as a single block brought from Aswan, its surface catching sunlight above scattered temple remains. The monument honours the Roman Emperor Diocletian. Built at the end of the third century, it followed his restoration of order in Alexandria. Medieval travellers imagined Pompey’s ashes resting at its top.

Serapeum remains spread around the base, recalling a temple dedicated to Serapis and Egyptian-Greek belief. Older granite sphinxes stand nearby, guarding the temple’s memory. Columns, statues, and carved stones gather through the garden, while the city’s lively rhythm continues beyond its calm. Ancient fragments meet the modern Alexandria skyline.
