Cecil John Rhodes
Cecil John Rhodes noktası, Güney Afrika’nın Cape Town kentinde, bölgenin sömürge tarihine açılan bir durak sunar. Burada, 5 Temmuz 1853’te İngiltere’de doğan İngiliz finansçı ve devlet adamının yaşamını izlersiniz. Rhodes, 1890 ile 1896 arasında Cape Colony başbakanlığı yaptı ve elmas ticaretinde belirleyici rol üstlendi.
Rhodes, 1888’de De Beers Consolidated Mines şirketini kurdu; şirket daha sonra dünya elmas üretiminin yüzde 90’ını kontrol etti. Sağlık sorunları onu genç yaşta Güney Afrika’ya getirdi, ardından Natal’da pamuk çiftliğinde ve Kimberley elmas sahalarında çalıştı. British South Africa Company, bugün Zimbabve ve Zambiya olarak bilinen toprakların sömürgeleştirilmesinde önemli rol oynadı. Oxford Üniversitesindeki Rhodes bursları eğitim alanında kalıcı bir miras bırakırken, sömürgeci politikaları Güney Afrika’nın ekonomik ve siyasi tarihinde tartışmalı izler bıraktı.
