Kaiserbahnhof

Kaiserbahnhof w Poczdamie stoi w pobliżu Nowego Pałacu, na terenie parku Sanssouci. Sandstone walls give the building the appearance of an English country villa. Ernst Eberhard von Ihne designed the station between 1905 and 1909 for Emperor Wilhelm II.

The private station served the emperor and his guests, including Theodore Roosevelt in 1910 and Tsar Nicholas II. During the Second World War, the Luftwaffe used the building as a base for Hermann Göring’s special train. After the war, the Blue Express connected the site with the Soviet military command. In 1952, East Germany’s state railway took over the building and used it as a political school and cultural venue. Restoration brought the deteriorating station back into use in 2005, and Deutsche Bahn now operates an academy there for senior executives.

The complex belongs to the UNESCO World Heritage Site around Sanssouci. A Kaisersaal preserves a fireplace, wood panelling and wooden floors. A central staircase once separated the emperor’s route from the platform hall, while the smaller Bürgerbahnhof remains a rare railway building from the 1860s.
