Residenz Würzburg
The Residenz Würzburg is a palace in Würzburg, built for the Prince-Bishops of Würzburg. Balthasar Neumann led its design with contributions from Austrian, southern German, and French architects.
Its architecture combines Baroque, Rococo, and Neoclassical forms across grand rooms and interior courtyards. Its high-ceilinged floors rise above servant mezzanines. The grand staircase commands attention beneath a vast, pillar-free vaulted ceiling. Giovanni Battista Tiepolo painted the world’s largest ceiling fresco with continents, animals, landscapes, and allegorical figures. Tiepolo appears within it beside architect Balthasar Neumann.
The interiors include the Imperial Hall, Court Chapel, Mirror Cabinet, and White Hall, with paintings, stucco, glass, and gold. Glass and gold cover the richly decorated Mirror Cabinet. War damage destroyed much of the interior, while preserved furnishings supported a long restoration. Restoration returned the rooms to their former state.
The façade displays vases, trophies, and a large coat of arms above the main entrance. The Court Chapel blends into the southern wing. The Frankoniabrunnen fountain stands before the palace in Residence Square. Residence Square frames the palace and its fountain. The Residenz, Court Gardens, and Residence Square form a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Residenz Würzburg property is recorded as wheelchair accessible.
