Stolperstein für Wilhelm Lebrecht
The Stolperstein für Wilhelm Lebrecht is a small brass-plated stone set into the pavement in Ulm.
It commemorates Wilhelm Lebrecht, a leather manufacturer and viola player. Together with his brothers, Wilhelm expanded his father’s leather factory into one of Germany’s largest. His family also belonged to Ulm’s musical life. Wilhelm played viola in the Lebrecht Quartet, a well-known group in the city, and lived with Rosa Kohn. The couple had sons named Curt, Walter, Hans and Heinrich.
After Nazi persecution, the family sold its business, left the Lebrecht Villa and emigrated to the United States. Later, the family moved onward to Brazil. His family faced Nazi persecution, exile and lasting separation. The memorial connects Wilhelm’s personal history with the persecution of Jewish people during the Nazi era. His story also recalls the family’s contribution to Ulm’s cultural life.
