Kleistu muiža

Kleistu Manor stands in Riga as a wooden estate house whose documented story reaches back to 1638. The present building dates from the eighteenth century.

Gothard von Vegesack commissioned the main house in 1764, after Georg Christoph Andreä acquired the estate. Its single-storey log structure rests on high masonry foundations. A mansard roof and Baroque form define the building, while a Classicist porch marks its entrance. The entrance porch uses four columns and a shallow pediment.

Historic interiors included stucco ceilings, painted wall fabrics, leather furniture, and Venetian and Dutch mirrors. A Dutch-style tiled stove added cobalt-blue decoration. The estate once included an inn, a tenant house, meadows, and forest patches across a broad rural landscape. Its later roles included dairy production, apartments, and scientific work.

After 1924, Kleisti became part of Riga. The manor grounds retain old oak trees beside surrounding forests and natural spaces. Pēteris Kupšs led forest planting in Kleisti for more than fifty years, involving local schoolchildren in the work. Today, the manor connects Riga’s rural estate history with urban development, research, and a transformed landscape. It is recognised as a national architectural monument.
