St. Maria

St. Maria is a small Rococo church in Germany, built in 1759 with graceful, softly curved forms. Its roof slopes gently down towards the west. The hall church opens into a light interior, while an oval choir projects at the eastern end. Above the sanctuary, a slender roof turret carries an onion dome.

The choir preserves the original Gothic cross-ribbed vault from the medieval predecessor. Three Rococo altars from the 1750s bring gold, colour, and carved detail into the space. At the high altar, a wooden Madonna and Child has an uncertain date and possibly Gothic origins. The side altars depict Francis Xavier and John Nepomuk, whose display includes the Lerchenfeld family coat of arms. A carved pulpit presents scenes from the parable of the sower. Above the chancel arch, a Madonna of the Rosary overlooks the nave. The ceiling painting shows the Assumption of Mary and is attributed to the Gebhard workshop without proof. Painted scenes from Mary’s life continue along the gallery balustrade.
