St.-Michaels-Kapelle
St.-Michaels-Kapelle is a Catholic chapel in Ochsenfurt, Germany, built as a medieval cemetery chapel. Its east-facing, two-storey Gothic form rises above a low base with a west portal.
Hans Bauer, an Ochsenfurt sculptor and stonemason, directed construction from 1440 to 1444 after plans appeared in 1426. A double-flight staircase and lower-floor entrance followed around 1505 and 1506. Inside, an ossuary level has a barrel vault with stichkappen, while the upper chapel carries painted cross-ribbed vaulting. The 1492 inscription band and plant-decorated keystones remain visible overhead.
A tympanum above the west portal, made around 1450, shows the blessed, the damned, and Christ judging the world. Mary and John the Baptist flank Christ in the upper relief. A 1890 Neo-Gothic altar case holds a sandstone Madonna from around 1420, alongside painted limewood figures of Michael and Sebastian. Modern stained glass by Karl Clobes adds colour to the historic interior.
