La Niña III (quemado)
La Niña III (quemado) remains a heavily damaged replica of the caravel associated with Christopher Columbus. Its blackened hull still shows the vessel’s original form.
Designed by mariner Carlos Etayo, the replica was built in Galicia with oak, pino gallero pine, and fir. The masts remain visible above the charred structure.
Its original hull measured about 17.3 metres long and 4.12 metres across, giving scale to the surviving remains. Fire damaged the replica while it stood in Parque Santa Catalina.
An archaeological assessment found most of the burnt structure beyond salvage, while the masts remained the main surviving elements. A commissioned technical study will inspect the remains.
Its report covers damaged areas, unaffected sections, and possible methods for rebuilding or conserving the replica. The study also considers future care and display.
Museo Elder is expected to participate once management changes receive authorization from the relevant island authority. The surviving masts preserve a visible link to the replica’s maritime design.
