Altes Rathaus

Altes Rathaus stands on Krumbach’s marketplace, at the highest point of a narrow ridge between the Kammel and Krumbach valleys. The rectangular building forms the centre of the historic town core. Built in 1679, it presents Baroque architecture beneath a gabled roof and an eastern roof turret on an octagonal base. Open arcades lead across the eastern ground floor, while half-timbering rises above them.

The building replaced an earlier town hall and first combined civic, commercial, and storage functions. Its basement held a wine cellar, while the ground floor and two attic floors stored grain. Meat sellers used the ground floor, and the upper floor contained the court and writing room. Renovations in 1933 and 1934 reopened the arcades, while the 1950 work expanded the attic offices. When the administration outgrew the building, shops and Krumbach’s tourism information moved into the ground floor.

The west facade carries a large mural added during the 1976 renovation. Its upper section shows the double-headed Austrian eagle and its centre displays the Günzburg district and Krumbach coats of arms. Four historical ruling families appear below: the Ellerbacher, Lamparter von Greifenstein, Weber von Pisenberg, and Liechtenstein-Kastelkorn. A fountain now stands in front, where the redesigned marketplace once served as a car park.
