In Frankfurt, Ikh bin a kleyner dreydl stands as a bronze memorial by artist Filippa Pettersson. Its site marks the Jewish children’s home that once stood on Hans-Thoma-Straße. A large dreidel shape gives the urban setting a vivid, immediately recognisable object.
The memorial emerged from a 2016 competition seeking remembrance for the children and caretakers who lived there. Many were deported to concentration camps under the Nazi regime, and only a few survived. Frankfurt installed the sculpture in 2017 while redesigning the surrounding area with city planning and road construction offices. The form also connects Jewish memory with Hanukkah, when the dreidel traditionally becomes part of children’s play.
Names engraved across the bronze surface invite you to see the children as individuals, not an anonymous group. Those marks turn a striking object into a physical place of remembrance within Frankfurt’s memorial landscape.
