Statue of Jan Hendrik Hofmeyr
The Statue of Jan Hendrik Hofmeyr stands in Church Square, Cape Town, portraying the South African journalist and politician known as “Onze Jan.” Anton van Wouw created the sculpture with the detailed, realistic approach associated with his work.
Church Square sits between Parliament Street and Spin Street, at a historic centre of Cape Town. In April 2015, white material carrying the words “A black woman raised me” covered the pedestal during a campaign against colonial-era statues, bringing public debate to this monument and its place in South Africa’s history.
