Artillerymen's Memorial
Artillerymen's Memorial stands in Cape Town's Company's Garden, a historic park with roots reaching back to the seventeenth century. A mounted howitzer and plaque face visitors there.
The memorial honours South African artillery soldiers who served during World War I and forms part of the Delville Wood Memorial. That larger commemoration recalls South African forces during the war. Delville Wood belonged to the Somme offensive, one of World War I's intense battles. South African forces fought there during the Somme offensive. The site marks South Africa's participation in global conflicts through a compact military landmark in central Cape Town.
Look closely at the cannon's raised barrel, which identifies the weapon as a howitzer. Its high-angle shell fire suited the demands of trench warfare. Company's Garden once served as a refreshment station for ships passing the Cape of Good Hope.
