KW Institute for Contemporary Art
KW Institute for Contemporary Art stands in Berlin-Mitte as a contemporary art institution inside a former margarine factory. The industrial structure remains visible around the exhibitions. Founded in 1991, the institution emerged shortly after the fall of the Berlin Wall, linking artistic activity with a changing city.
A second former building produced quartz lamps and spray paint before becoming part of the site. National and international partnerships include MoMA PS1 in New York and the Julia Stoschek Collection in Düsseldorf and Berlin. The Berlin Biennale for Contemporary Art also uses KW as a regular venue. Thirty-seven curators shaped Thirty-Seven Rooms across different venues in 1992.
Into Me / Out Of Me followed in 2006 through a collaboration with P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center. Regarding Terror: The RAF Exhibition examined public perceptions of the Red Army Faction and sparked controversy in Germany. That contrast between industrial traces and difficult subjects gives the visit its distinctive Berlin setting.
