Museo San fedele

In the heart of Milan, inside a historic church from the sixteenth century, the Museo San Fedele sits. The Jesuit fathers made it a focal point of dialogue between art and faith. Between its walls old, modern and contemporary art meet.

The museum opened on December 31, 2014, after a decade of careful restorations. Its roots reach to the fifties of the previous century, when the San Fedele Gallery began to bridge the gap between art and faith. Father Arcangelo Favaro led the mission and invited to it renowned artists: Mario Sironi and Lucio Fontana. One of the prominent works in the collection is Fontana's altarpiece "Il Sacro Cuore", which describes the appearance of Christ to Saint Margaret Maria Alacoque.

In the crypt, completed in 1653 and dedicated to the Passion of Christ, statues of angels and prophets stand. Francesco M. Richini designed the sacristy in the baroque style. In it, beside statues of Jesuit saints, the Taurino brothers engraved in walnut wood panels of biblical scenes. The work "Corona di Spine" by Claudio Parmiggiani is made from barbed wire and gold, and reflects on the face of Christ. David Simpson's monochrome paintings add a contemporary layer to the story the place tells. A collection of relics from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries testifies to the historical prestige of the church. And in the "Dancers' Chapel", named after the dancers of the La Scala opera house, an installation of silver slippers by Mimmo Paladino awaits.
