Monument voor de gevallenen 1940-1945 stands in Ter Pelkwijkpark in Zwolle, combining a bronze figure, a low wall, and inscriptions about wartime loss. Zwolle sculptor Titus Leeser designed the memorial during the postwar reconstruction. The kneeling young man watches his surroundings with an alert expression, suggesting resilience after occupation and violence.
Leeser linked falling with rising again after suffering. The bronze sculpture was cast by the Binder foundry in Haarlem and received municipal monument status in 2005. Numbers on the memorial wall record 44 soldiers killed in fighting, 35 executed civilians, and 653 people who died in concentration camps.
Other figures recall 34 civilian deaths from bombing and shootings, alongside at least 29 Allied soldiers killed nearby. Restoration in 2014 and 2015 revealed that the sculpture had been welded rather than screwed together. Annual commemorations take place here, while the Geert Grote school and Koningin Emmaschool help care for the memorial and learn its history.
