Pestalozzi-Denkmal

Pestalozzi-Denkmal stands in Pestalozzi-Anlage beside Bahnhofstrasse in Zürich, as a bronze sculpture by Hugo Siegwart. The monument rises six metres above its concrete foundation. Its 2.4-metre figure shows Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi gently holding a poorly dressed boy’s hand, with a granite pedestal beneath them. A simple inscription records Pestalozzi’s name and the years 1746 and 1827.

The scene recalls his work in Stans, where he cared for children affected by violence and upheaval. Zürich created this memorial during the late-nineteenth-century monument boom, after a forty-member committee gathered support from across Switzerland and abroad. A public competition produced eighteen designs, and the jury selected Siegwart’s proposal after the sculptor revised its figure and pedestal. Bronze casting finished in 1899, and the city, canton, and federal government shared the costs. Wheelchair access makes the monument reachable within its urban setting.
