Cargo Domizil Zentrum Mülligen

The Cargo Domizil Zentrum Mülligen is a logistics and freight centre in Zurich, designed by architect Max Vogt. Round arches separated the entrance from the counter hall. Profiled ceilings once matched colourful terrazzo floors, which later gave way to glass-stone flooring. Cast-iron columns with visible bolts support flat roofs and saddle-shaped skylights above the goods and reception halls. Each side wing has its own staircase, without a large central staircase.

The late-Historicist goods station formed a link between Zurich’s Aussersihl district and the railway tracks. Its imposing head building and staggered loading tracks provided a model for freight facilities in Switzerland and abroad. Engineer Robert Moser developed the saw principle associated with the station. The site grew from Zurich’s early goods ramps and sheds into a complex with halls, warehouses, cellars, and tracks. Customs storage and night transfers later expanded the station’s role in freight handling. Mechanical cranes, electric tractors, forklifts, and a container terminal marked further changes in the site’s working life. The centre unites Zurich’s freight history with architecture and railway organisation.
