Kulturspeicher

Kulturspeicher stands at the Old Harbor in Würzburg, inside a former grain store built in 1904. Its 160-metre length combines shell limestone, Udelfanger sandstone, glass extensions, and angled natural-stone slats. The slats tilt up to 45 degrees, creating the appearance of a half-opened blind.

After standing unused, the building gained a new purpose through a conversion carried out from 1999 to 2002. Twelve museum rooms now provide 3,500 square metres for the Peter C. Ruppert Collection and Würzburg’s municipal art collection. Those collections span the nineteenth century, modern art, contemporary art, the German Democratic Republic, and the Federal Republic. Changing exhibitions, workshops, concerts, and guided tours add activity beyond the permanent displays. Theater tanzSpeicher presents dance and runs a dance workshop, while the basement houses the Bockshorn cabaret. A gallery, artists’ house, and printmaking studio occupy the right wing.

The original wooden roof truss survives in the central foyer, linking the cultural centre to its industrial past. Behind the stone slats, a new mounting system and pigeon deterrents support easier maintenance. Wheelchair access adds practical welcome to this gathering of art, performance, and creative work.
