Marienkapelle Unterkürnach
Marienkapelle Unterkürnach stands in the Kürnachtal near Hofgut Kürnach, a secluded chapel connected to a former princely estate. Built in 1780 under Fürstabt Honorius Roth von Schreckenstein, it offers a quiet setting shaped by local religious and estate history.
Inside, three gold-and-white altars and a matching pulpit brighten the space beneath ceiling frescoes attributed to Franz Joseph Herrmann. The nave shows the Assumption of Mary, while the choir presents her Coronation, both uncovered during renovations in 1951 and 1952. A crucifix by Allgäu artist Konrad Hegnauer adds another carefully made focal point, and later work preserved the bell tower, roof, façade and gilded cross.
The chapel remains a popular wedding venue, with its secluded position beside the former hunting and summer residence of the Kempten prince-abbots. Look upwards in the nave to see the Assumption of Mary above you.
