Scuola Grande di San Teodoro

Scuola Grande di San Teodoro stands in Venice as a historic confraternity building dedicated to San Teodoro, the city’s first patron saint. Merchants and artisans began its construction for a confraternity based at San Salvador.

Simone Sorella drew the original plans, while Francesco and Tommaso Contin later expanded the structure. Baldassarre Longhena shaped the building’s piano nobile. Inside, paintings by Vassilacchi, Jacopo Palma il Giovane, Balestra, and Bassano bring Venetian art from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries into view.

The building later served as a flour warehouse, dormitory, archive, and cinema. Its original work supported charity, education, and training for people in Venice. The hall functions as a Venetian concert venue. I Musici Veneziani perform Baroque music and opera arias here, including works associated with Mozart, Rossini, Verdi, Puccini, and Vivaldi.

Performances of Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons are among the hall’s highlights. Performers wear original eighteenth-century Venetian dress, giving these concerts a distinctive historical setting. The ground floor provides space for art exhibitions and other events, including parts of the Venice Biennale.
