Oudegracht
Oudegracht runs through the medieval heart of Utrecht, forming the oldest of the city’s two main inner-city canals. Historic gabled houses line the water, while cyclists and pedestrians follow the cobblestone streets and paths beside it.
Water-level wharfs and cellars give this canal its distinctive character: merchants once loaded goods directly from boats, and the former storage spaces now hold restaurants, cafés, shops, and workshops. Boats, kayaks, and paddleboards move along the water, while nearby markets include the Lapjesmarkt, the country’s oldest and largest fabric market, established over four centuries ago.
The canal also brings Utrecht’s past close to landmarks such as the Dom Tower and St. Martin’s Cathedral. At the water’s edge, a meal in a historic cellar places centuries of trade, architecture, and daily city life within the same view.
