Rudolf-Duala-Manga-Bell-Platz is a public square in Ulm, Germany, linking the city with Cameroonian colonial history. You encounter a place shaped by Rudolf Duala Manga Bell, a Duala king and resistance leader.
Born in 1873, he studied in Douala and later attended the Gymnasium in Ulm. His position changed when German authorities planned to relocate the Duala for European settlements along the Wouri River. He led pan-Duala resistance through letters, petitions, and legal arguments against the proposed land seizure. Authorities ignored these efforts, and his appeals to European governments and African leaders brought his arrest.
A rushed trial during the beginning of the First World War ended with his execution for high treason in 1914. Cameroonians remembered him as a martyr and a symbol of resistance against colonial oppression. Ulm’s square connects his education in Germany with the struggle over Duala ancestral land.
