Oberer Donauturm (Werk XXVIII)
Oberer Donauturm, also known as Werk XXVIII, is a historic defence tower within Ulm’s extensive Bundesfestung.
The tower stands beside Ulm’s Danube riverfront. Construction took place between 1843 and 1855, following Major von Schele’s design for a protected tower defending the Danube.
Major von Schele designed this protected military tower. Its white construction material explains the familiar name White Tower, while the structure remains largely unchanged.
The original roof is no longer present on the tower. As part of the Danube front, it formed one element of the wider Bundesfestung Ulm, a major fortress complex.
The wider fortress network helped protect the region. After the Second World War, the tower changed from military service to civilian use by the scouting group Weiße Rotte.
The scouting group Weiße Rotte uses the tower. Clear lines, durable materials and a defensive position show the practical character of nineteenth-century military architecture.
The tower still marks Ulm’s historic Danube defences.
