Kienlesbergbastion (Werk X)
Kienlesbergbastion (Werk X) stands in Ulm as a closed bastion within the Bundesfestung Ulm, one of Germany’s largest fortress complexes. Built between 1843 and 1852, it faced the Blautal and Lehrertal valleys as part of the city’s defensive system.
Olt von Hügel designed the structure with a reduit, escarp walls, powder magazines, a dry moat, a glacis and a bonnet casemate. The nearly complete remains show how nineteenth-century fortifications combined reinforced arches with carefully arranged defensive spaces. Württemberg troops occupied the site after Austrian fortress artillery left in 1866, and a hollow traverse joined the defences during modernisation around 1880.
The double caponier in the salient once helped protect the forward trenches and now houses a local youth club.
