Chiesa di San Francesco d'Assisi
Chiesa di San Francesco d'Assisi stands in Italy, with foundations reaching back to the thirteenth century. Its present baroque form emerged from an eighteenth-century reconstruction completed in 1761.
Bernardo Antonio Vittone led the work with Mario Ludovico Quarini. Inside, a polychrome marble main altar focuses attention beneath an altarpiece attributed to Federico Zuccari. The painting shows the Virgin and Child with Saints Anne, Francis and Catherine. The second chapel on the left belongs to the Compagnia di Sant’Anna, founded in 1636 by seasonal artisans from the Lake Lugano area.
Alessandro Casella began its stucco decoration in 1636, followed by Francesco Bettino in 1713 and Giovanni Battista Sanbartolomeo in 1762. Nineteenth- and twentieth-century restorations followed damage from the aerial bombardment of 13 July 1943. The roof had been restored by June 1944, leaving marble, stucco and repair work layered throughout the church.
