Chiesa della Madonna degli Angeli

In Italy, Chiesa della Madonna degli Angeli presents a marble-clad façade and a broad arched entrance. Four columns support the arch, with carved angel heads crowning their capitals. Inside, a single nave leads through connected lateral chapels, creating a continuous and intimate sequence of spaces.

The building began as a convent for reformed Franciscan friars in 1631 and was consecrated in 1654. Carlo Ceppi reshaped the façade, dome, and bell tower between 1908 and 1911. His semispherical dome ranks among the area’s early reinforced-concrete constructions. Two hemicycles form a false transept, where baroque altars contrast with Ceppi’s cleaner architectural lines. The semicircular apse preserves a marble high altar and an old wooden choir. The church became a parish in 1834 and a sanctuary in 1916.

Camillo Benso di Cavour’s funeral took place here on 7 June 1861, marking the church’s national history. Incendiary bombs damaged part of the roof and vault during an air raid on 8 August 1943. Repairs followed, while the repeated angels still connect the marble façade, baroque interiors, and twentieth-century reconstruction. Wheelchair access adds a practical welcome to this layered architectural setting.
