Chiesa di Santa Maria Maggiore
Chiesa di Santa Maria Maggiore stands in Piazza Trento, Tivoli, and is also known as San Francesco. The church dates from the ninth century in Tivoli. Its three naves preserve a Gothic marble portal, a Cosmatesque floor, and chapels along the left side. The right side has no chapels, and medieval masonry remains visible from Villa d’Este’s courtyard. The facade includes a rose window, while the bell tower was completed in 1602. The interior contains a Gothic marble tabernacle. A wooden crucifix attributed to Baccio da Montelupo stands among frescoes associated with the Zuccari school.
The presbytery dates between 1577 and 1582. Its tombstones commemorate Este cardinals, and the main altar presents the Madonna Avvocata attributed to Jacopo Torriti. Other works include a triptych by Bartolomeo da Siena and a wooden altarpiece linked to Luca Signorelli’s school. The organ, built in 1978, adds a modern instrument to this historic setting. Together, these details show how medieval, Gothic, Renaissance, and later elements meet within one church.
