A Visit to the Museum: Taking the Past Forward is a bronze sculpture beside a museum in Singapore. Chern Lian Shan created it in 2000.
Two figures stand before the façade: an elderly man holds an eager young girl’s hand. She gestures towards a woman in modern dress on the second-floor balcony. The three figures create a lively exchange between the street, the building and different generations. The work forms part of Singapore’s public art walking trail, connecting cultural heritage with community life. Its bronze surface gives the scene a lasting presence.
Chern Lian Shan was born in Taipei and moved to Singapore in 1980. He taught sculpture at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts and established his studio in 1985. Look closely at the girl’s raised gesture, which directs your attention from the older man to the woman above.
