Plaza del Triunfo

Plaza del Triunfo stands in Seville at the centre of three buildings recognised as UNESCO World Heritage sites since 1987. The Cathedral, Real Alcázar, and Archivo General de Indias define this historic square.

The plaza takes its name from the Baroque Templete del Triunfo de Nuestra Señora del Patrocinio. This small temple was built in 1757 beside the Archivo de Indias.

It commemorates the Lisbon earthquake of 1755, which reached Seville during a cathedral mass. The interrupted service continued outdoors on the ground that became Plaza del Triunfo.

A monument to the Immaculate Conception faces the temple and was completed in 1918. Lorenzo Coullaut Valera created four statues representing notable Sevillian defenders of the doctrine.

They depict Murillo, Miguel Cid, Martínez Montañés, and Juan de Pineda. The square has also carried names linked to nearby buildings, hospitals, stored stones, and grain.

Its official name became Plaza del Triunfo in 1845, after the earthquake monument had been erected. An urban project from 1848 proposed levelling and paving the area.

By 1873, the plaza had an elliptical layout with trees, benches, and candelabras. The surrounding buildings connect Islamic, Christian, Renaissance, Gothic, and Baroque histories.

The Cathedral includes the tomb of Christopher Columbus, while La Giralda rises from a former minaret beside it. The Real Alcázar adds palace architecture shaped by Moorish and Christian influences.

The Archivo General de Indias preserves documents about Spain’s colonial history in the Americas. Nearby, the narrow streets and lively plazas of Barrio de Santa Cruz extend Seville’s historic atmosphere.
