Rīgas Jaunā Svētās Ģertrūdes baznīca
Riga New St. Gertrude Church stands in Riga, Latvia, outside the medieval old town. This Lutheran parish church presents one of the city’s last examples of eclectic architecture, blending historical styles in a building created during Riga’s expansion beyond its old walls.
Built between 1903 and 1906, the church became a centre for Riga’s growing Latvian congregations. More than 30,000 members had once shared the older St. Gertrude Church, where German and Latvian congregations alternated Sunday services. The new building gave the Latvian communities their own place, while the older church continued serving German-speaking worshippers.
A pipe organ provides the clearest link between the two churches: August Martin built it between 1867 and 1876, and workers moved it here in 1906. The surrounding church and cemetery also carry traces of Riga’s difficult past, including burials connected with epidemics, famine and migration.
