The Potsdam Museum presents the resistance efforts behind the attempted coup of 20 July 1944. Henning von Tresckow joined Potsdam’s First Regiment of Foot in 1917 before entering the Ninth Infantry Regiment. He condemned Wehrmacht, SS and SD practices in occupied territories. Military defeats in Poland, France, Scandinavia and the Soviet Union strengthened opposition within the German army. Claus von Stauffenberg later carried out the assassination plan at Hitler’s headquarters, the Wolf’s Lair. The bomb failed, and von Tresckow died at the front in Ostrow, Russia, on 21 July 1944.
The Gestapo exhumed and cremated his body after a trial. Many close conspirators were executed in Berlin that same night. Guided tours organised by the Potsdam Museum add context to this history.
