Garde-Ulanen-Kaserne
The Garde-Ulanen-Kaserne stands in Potsdam’s Jägervorstadt as a former military barracks with Norman castle-style architecture. Built in several phases from 1861 to 1880, it housed the Third Garde-Ulanen Regiment of the Prussian Army. Towers, masonry façades and the historic arrangement of the buildings preserve that military character.
The complex became quarters for Potsdam’s police in 1920 after the First World War. In 1933, the Wehrmacht returned the site to military use, later housing parts of Infantry Regiment Nine. Soviet armed forces used the barracks after the Second World War until 1991, when monument protection followed.
Extensive renovation prepared the grounds for the 2001 Federal Horticultural Show and new civilian uses. The site now includes an upper secondary centre, Deutsche Kreditbank and Kunsthaus Potsdam, opened by Frank Michael Zeidler and Hubertus von der Goltz in 2002. The restored Alte Waffenmeisterei has served as a print shop since that year.
