Médiathèque Françoise-Sagan
Médiathèque Françoise-Sagan is a municipal library in Paris, occupying the site of the former Saint-Lazare hospital. Its facade and interior features preserve elements protected as historical monuments. The building covers 4,300 square metres, with 3,600 square metres open to visitors. A welcoming hall, exhibition space, multipurpose room and reading areas shape the interior.
The site began as a twelfth-century leprosarium dedicated to Saint-Ladre, also known as Saint-Lazare. In 1632, Vincent de Paul established the Lazarists and a home for foundlings here. The grounds later held a prison from 1794, followed by a hospital that closed in 1998. Conversion into a library began in 1999, combining preserved historic structures with cultural, educational and sports facilities.
More than 100,000 documents fill the shelves, including 30,000 for children and 52,000 for teenagers and adults. The collection also contains 12,000 CDs and 12,000 DVDs. Material from L’Heure joyeuse connects the library with France’s first municipal children’s library, founded in 1924. Wheelchair-accessible spaces, workshops and language courses support a varied community.
