Kreuzkirche

Kreuzkirche stands in the centre of Ochsenfurt, Germany, as a Catholic church associated with the former town hospital. The church is dedicated to the Holy Cross and Saint Elisabeth of Thuringia. Its recessed choir dates from 1499, while the three-storey tower carries a pointed roof in the Echter Gothic style. A richly carved west portal from the mid-fifteenth century welcomes visitors into this layered architectural setting.

The nave preserves traces of an earlier Carolingian building, including a sandstone head in the choir. A record from 1413 mentions a vicarage dedicated to the Holy Cross, Saint Helena, and Saint Elisabeth. The west side changed during the eighteenth century, and the nave received its coffered ceiling in the nineteenth century. The choir’s net-like ribbed vault rests on Renaissance-profiled consoles above angel heads, with a Franconian coat of arms on the end wall.

Three altars stand inside: a cross rises above the plain main altar, with a carved Madonna of Protection to the right. Saint Elisabeth appears at the left altar, echoing the late Gothic tympanum above the entrance. Renovations uncovered a fresco from 1449 and a 1448 wall painting showing a station on the way to Golgotha without Christ. The church belongs to Saint Andreas parish and the Ochsenfurt parish community, and its hospital connection remains visible in its role as a place of care and worship.
