Vorwerk Schwaighofen (Werk 12)
Vorwerk Schwaighofen (Werk 12) stands in Neu-Ulm as a historic fortification within the Ulm Fortress. Built between 1850 and 1853, it formed part of one of nineteenth-century Europe’s largest fortress systems.
Its eastern orientation protected Neu-Ulm’s southeastern corner from approaches through Reutti and Finningen. A reduit forms the central stronghold. Caponiers, an escarpment and a dry moat shaped the defensive layout around it. The polygonal design followed the New Prussian Fortress System, developed under Prussian construction manager Moritz Karl Ernst von Prittwitz und Gaffron.
The original plan faced south, but builders turned the work towards the east. A bonnet battery was removed in 1880, while the reduit and caponiers became residential and commercial spaces around 1960. Since 25 June 1973, the preserved structure has held protected-monument status.
