Santa Maria del Suffragio

Santa Maria del Suffragio stands on Corso XXII Marzo in Milan as a Catholic church shaped by the city’s expansion. It began in 1577, serving Calvairate when that community still lay beyond Milan’s Spanish walls. Archbishop Andrea Carlo Ferrari led its reconstruction in 1896, creating the building recorded here today.

Its salienti façade combines light stone and red brick, with three ogival portals beneath mosaic lunettes. The central lunette shows the Madonna enthroned with the Child. Bronze doors from 1996 present episodes from Mary’s life, including the Annunciation and the Holy Family. Inside, three naves form a Latin cross beneath cross vaults and an octagonal tiburio. Romanesque triforate windows illuminate the crossing. A deep choir and polygonal apse frame the presbytery, where marble and bronze furnishings date from 2006.

Aldo Carpi’s 1946 presbytery frescoes depict the Crucifixion and Resurrection after his experiences in Nazi camps. Carrara marble marks the modern baptistery in the right transept. Other works include the alabaster Mater Misericordiae, Leone Lodi’s Saint Anthony, and Valerio Pilon’s terracotta Saint Monica. The original 1915 high altar now stands in the nearby Chapel of San Proto, which holds the martyr’s relics.
