Parco Martiri della Libertà Iracheni Vittime del Terrorismo
Parco Martiri della Libertà Iracheni Vittime del Terrorismo occupies Milan’s eastern district beside the Martesana Canal, forming a green space within the city. Trees and water shape the view along its urban edge. Founded as Parco Martesana in 1978, the grounds combine shaded paths with a large amphitheatre. Paulownias add purple flowers among the taller trees.
The planting includes American and silver maples, oaks, elms, and paulownias, giving each season a changing canopy. An amphitheatre provides space for performances and gatherings. A cycling route through the park links Milan with Cassano d’Adda, while designated dog areas serve visitors with pets. The cycling route follows the canal through the park.
The Martesana Canal began in 1441 for irrigation and milling before later expansion supported navigation. Leonardo da Vinci contributed to its navigation works. In 2006, Milan renamed the site to honour Iraqi freedom martyrs who died as victims of terrorism. That name connects the park to solidarity with global peace and justice.
