Memoriale della Shoah lies beneath Milan’s Central Station, where exposed raw concrete marks a place of Holocaust remembrance in Italy. Binario 21 forms its central historical site.
During the Second World War, Jews, political prisoners and resistance fighters were forced onto cattle cars there for Auschwitz-Birkenau and Mauthausen. The restored structure removes post-war additions and exposes its historical scars.
Visitors enter the Sala delle Testimonianze, where survivor voices introduce the human stories behind the deportations. The Binario della Destinazione ignota evokes the uncertain fate awaiting those who were transported. The Muro dei Nomi records the names of people sent away. Study, research and dialogue spaces include the Laboratorio della Memoria, while educational programmes and temporary exhibitions connect remembrance with coexistence.
