Guglielmo Breuer
Guglielmo Breuer’s Stolperstein stands in Merano, South Tyrol, in front of his former residence. The small concrete cube carries a brass plate commemorating a Jewish resident born in 1871.
On September 16, 1943, German authorities arrested him with twenty-four other people during raids on Merano’s Jewish community. The group was held in the basement of the former Balilla House, then transported to Reichenau, where four detainees died during six months of imprisonment. In early March 1944, the remaining prisoners went to Auschwitz, where Breuer was murdered on March 7.
Gunter Demnig installed the memorial in May 2012 among thirty-three Stolpersteine supported by Merano’s Jewish community and local schools. Its brass surface connects an everyday street with the history of Nazi persecution, while the former Balilla House survives only in the story.
