Landestheater Schwaben
Landestheater Schwaben stands in Memmingen as a theatre building with a simple, large gabled form and a neo-Baroque west facade. The building is wheelchair accessible.
Its story begins with the St. Elisabeth convent, founded in 1258 for women following the Third Order of Saint Francis. City expansion incorporated the structure around 1380. Secularisation in 1529 ended its convent use. The former schoolhouse became a theatre in 1802, after the Dramatic-Lovers Society acquired it.
A major renovation in 1877 modernised the roof and raised the auditorium ceiling, while work from 1974 to 1976 opened the cloister to the foyer. A southern extension completed in October 2010 brought workshops, rehearsal stages, a studio stage and theatre apartments beneath one roof. Glass-roofed workshops and a large stage lock give the complex its clearest modern detail.
