Kaponniere Malakoff

Kaponniere Malakoff, also known as Fort Malakoff, is a historic military structure in Mainz’s old town. Its red sandstone walls form a quarter-circle beside the Rhine.

Construction began in 1843 during the Rhine straightening project and continued through several phases until 1873. Prussian engineers included it within Mainz’s left-bank Rhine fortifications.

Major Johann Pientka, known as Haak, designed this freestanding work within the later Rhine throat fortification. The building rises across two storeys.

Shooting embrasures, cannon embrasures, round-arched windows, and two stair towers shape the visible architecture. Small loophole-shaped openings pierce the massive Rhine-facing walls.

A courtyard behind the structure has man-high perimeter walls and an iron gate. The fort originally served as a multi-storey gun emplacement.

In 1855, the building received its name after the Crimean War in Russia. Ownership passed to the Hessian Ludwig Railway in 1863.

The structure then provided housing for socially disadvantaged people before becoming a bar within Hyatt Regency Hotel Mainz. Malakoff Terrace takes its name from this landmark.

Fort Malakoff Park also preserves the fort’s name in Mainz’s surrounding commercial area. The spot is wheelchair accessible and remains a prominent architectural feature.
