Lokschuppen Alte Neustadt

The Lokschuppen Alte Neustadt stands in Magdeburg’s Alte Neustadt district as a historic rectangular locomotive shed. Builders completed the rubble-stone building in 1863. It originally belonged to the Alte Neustadt freight station and remains among Germany’s oldest surviving rectangular locomotive sheds. Its single storey and shallow, overhanging gable roof define a compact railway structure. Large round-arched entrances mark the gable ends, while high oculi and brick arches contrast with the rubble-stone walls. Round-arched windows line both long sides of the building. A water crane attached to one long side records the shed’s former service for Magdeburg’s harbour railway. The building no longer connects to the railway network. After vacancy and decay, private owners acquired the shed in 2006 and restored it according to heritage-preservation standards by 2012. The restored building houses an engineering and expert office. It also provides space for training and events within the Alte Neustadt district. Theodor-Kozlowski-Straße runs directly east of the shed, alongside an area mixing historic and modern buildings. Alte Neustadt lies north of Magdeburg’s old town between the railway network and the western Elbe bank. The district includes Otto von Guericke University, the Fraunhofer Institute, and cultural and educational institutions.
