Pöstlingbergkirche

Pöstlingbergkirche stands on the summit of Pöstlingberg, Linz’s local hill, overlooking the city from above. Its white and pale-pink façade rises between twin towers topped with black domes. A double staircase leads to the portal, while a small terrace opens towards the viewing platform and its broad view over Linz.

This late Baroque cross-dome church began after Franz Anton Obermayr carried the Maria Pöstlingberg image here in 1716. Pilgrims gathered around the Pietà from 1720, and the completed church received the image in 1747. The circular central space, short transept arms and westward choir create a distinctive interior arrangement. Fires destroyed the roof in 1919 and 1963, but reconstruction preserved the building.

The 2022 organ carries a wide metal band bearing the words “Wer begreift, hat Flügel.” A fresco on the left exterior shows Obermayr carrying the sacred image into the church. In the crypt, a nativity scene adds another small detail beneath this landmark above Linz.
