Hl. Familie
Hl. Familie is a Roman Catholic parish church in Linz, standing southeast of the city centre in the growing Neustadtviertel. Its late historicist architecture looks back to older church traditions.
The idea emerged in the mid-nineteenth century, as residents sought a church for the developing neighbourhood. Bishop Franz Maria Doppelbauer acquired the site in 1890. Matthäus Schlager designed the building, which rose between 1907 and 1912. Bishop Rudolph Hittmair consecrated it on 31 October 1912.
Inside, Schlager also designed the high altar, while Andreas Strickner created most of the paintings and artistic decoration. The Mauracher brothers built the organ. Dedicated in 1929, it was then Linz’s largest organ. Monument protection preserves the building, while parish groups, charitable work and community activities continue around its services. The handcraft group has met since 1984, and the hiking club Schmetterlinge began in 2002.
