Kongresshalle am Zoo
Kongresshalle am Zoo stands beside Leipzig Zoo as an event building with Jugendstil details, a zoo-facing wing, and a 50-metre tower. Heinrich Rust designed the 77-metre-long structure, which opened in 1900 as the zoo’s social hall. Inside, historic halls include the Richard Wagner Hall and the neo-Baroque Bach Hall, while modern conference facilities now serve events for 10 to 1,200 people.
Music, theatre, congresses, sport, and jazz have shaped the building’s history. The Gewandhaus Orchestra performed here from 1946 until 1981, and the Theater der Jungen Welt used the White Hall until 1989. After a fire and closure in 1989, extensive renovation from 2001 to 2015 restored the building and added four congress halls. Today, fifteen halls and rooms combine historic interiors with contemporary conference and media technology.
The Leipzig Jazz Days have taken place here annually since 1978. A former concert organ, installed in 1948 and used for only five concerts, once stood in two sections beside the Great Hall’s stage.
