Altöttinger Kapelle
Altöttinger Kapelle stands about two kilometres north of Landsberg am Lech, beside a footpath leading to the Waldfriedhof. Its small neo-Gothic form includes baroque architectural elements. Inside, an image of Our Lady of Altötting connects the quiet prayer space with Bavaria’s famous Marian pilgrimage tradition. May brings regular devotions dedicated to the Virgin Mary.
Marian devotion began here in 1704, when salt carrier Zacharias Neumair raised a column after recovering from serious illness. A reported healing soon drew pilgrims to the place. Citizens eventually received permission in 1719, and a baroque chapel honouring Our Lady of Altötting replaced the column. The present building replaced that earlier chapel in 1856 and 1857.
During the rebuilding, the grounds and approach changed, while an avenue of mainly linden trees marked the route for pilgrims. The avenue offered summer shade and guidance through snowy winters. Some of those original trees remain along the approach.
