Maria-Magdalenen-Kirche
Maria-Magdalenen-Kirche stands in Elmschenhagen, a district of Kiel, as a neo-Gothic church completed in 1866. Its 56-metre tower marks the building’s architectural presence.
The church replaced a medieval brick predecessor associated with the Battle of Bornhöved and Saint Mary Magdalene. That dedication explains the church’s name and historical connection.
A lightning strike damaged the earlier building, leading to Gustav Ludolf Martens’s design for its replacement. Dorothea von der Wisch helped fund the construction through a legacy.
The medieval inventory disappeared, while the neo-Gothic pulpit survived wartime destruction of the altar area. Hans Gottfried von Stockhausen created the present stained-glass windows.
The windows depict biblical stories, and the tower houses bells cast in 1948 and 1949. An organ acquired in 1949 was replaced in 1970 and renovated in 1994.
The church belongs to the Trinitatisgemeinde, which includes several Kiel districts. Its Elmschenhagen parish history reaches back to the thirteenth century and Preetz Monastery.
